I believe the answer is: Elections
In democratic countries, elections determine which representatives obtained the support of the people and which are not. through election, citizens could identify the representatives that advocated for similar value and principles as us and appoint them as the extension of our involvement during the legislation process.
Finding meaning in a family tie because one perceives that it has a meaning.
