Why was South Carolina discovered?

South Carolina was first discovered by the Spanish led by Francisco Gordillo in 1521.  Five years later, Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón established the first European colony in the area that now comprises America. It was called San Miguel de Gualdape.  The new colony was inhabited by 600 settlers, as well as African slaves, but was deserted after three months. The French and the Spanish would later claim the area. Despite several attempts, the French were unsuccessful because of attacks by Indian tribes and low supplies.  Later in 1629, the English laid claim to South Carolina.  King Charles appointed Robert Heath to manage the colonies.
