Hello from MrBillDoesMath!

Answer:  The quotient is not a number at all. It's simply undefined.

Discussion:

Consider the numbers "a" and "b" and further suppose that

a/0 = b

Multiplying both sides by 0 gives

(a/0) * 0 = b * 0

Cancelling the highlighted 0s gives a = 0!. Something is wrong here as  "a" is not equal to zero!  The error was produced by assuming the divison by 0 yield a number.

You will encounter this "divide by zero" matter several times in a Calculus courses.

Supposed that you balance your checkbook and find that you are overdrawn by $20; that is, your balance is -$20. Then you go to t
FrozenT [24]

Answer:

The balance is $18.

Step-by-step explanation:

You are in the negatives so you want to add so that your balance is positive.

1. -20 + 38 = x

x will be the variable that will be the final balance.

2.  18 = x

If you put this on a number line, you will see that when you add 38 to -20, your balance becomes 18. Therefore, your answer is 18.

Sushil was thinking of a number. Sushil subtracts 3.8 from the number and gets an answer of 53.6. Form an equation with
kkurt [141]

Answer:

x = 3.8 + 53.6

Step-by-step explanation:

From the info that they gave you, you can tell that the original number is unknown, so that is x. Since Sushil is subracting 3.8, meaning, to get x, you're going to have to do the opposite which is........addition! So, to get x, you have to add 3.8, and 53.6. I hope I make sense!!
