The end of slavery started off good, but ended in disaster. At first, the Freedman man's bureau helped former slaves get educated, find jobs, and locate family members. Then the black codes came. The black codes said that slaves must work a farm, sharecropping [a form of work where a person got a small portion of land, and on their land, they gave a share of the crops to the owner. In return, they got a small pay and small house.]. After a new constitutional amendment, the black codes were nullified. But when an election between the Republican and Democratic president, it was tied. So the Democrats and Republicans came to an agreement: The Republicans could have their president, and in return the president would withdraw the remaining soldiers in the South. With no supervision, the South took away the Freedman's right to vote. Which meant new laws, like segregation were passed, since blacks could no longer vote or run for the government. Now things were worse than when there was slavery.
Hope this helps! Have a happy New Years!
