Only dwarf birches, willows, lichens, and mosses grow in the thin layer of acidic soil. Indigenous fauna include the arctic fox, reindeer, white hare, lemming, and common and willow ptarmigan.

Although very little life exists in the region, there are some exceptions to this rule. In terms of vegetation, you can find some blue-green algae, mosses and lichens. In terms of animals, the most common ones to be found are polar bears, seals, walruses and ocean mammals. You can also find various species of birds.
