Along with the registration fee,the team must also need to spenda total of $1240 on equipment. To pay for the cost of the registration fee and the equipment the players held a car wash and raised $786. Then they decided to sell candles for $9.50 per candle to cover the remaining costs. If each player sells the same amount of candles how many candles much each player sell?

To start you find the total amount of money they need by adding the registration fee and the equipment.
572 + 1240 = 1812
Then you find out how much they still need after the car wash.
1812 - 786 = 1026
Now you set up what you have in an equation. You know that 9.50 per candle equals out to be a total of $1026. 
9.50x = 1026 
9.50x/9.50 = 1026/9.50
x = 108 
So you now know that they need to sell 108 candles to get the remaining money. So now you must figure out how many candles each player needs to sell. 
108/12 = 9
Each player needs to sell 9 candles.
