The most commonly held belief in the movement of the social gospel movement, was that the Second Coming couldn't perpetuate as long as evil resides on the Earth. The belief slowly terminated, but modern churches still use it to inspire.

Due to industrialization, large cities like New York flooded with immigrants and they see significant social issues crime, poverty, sanitation, child labor, alcoholism, and economic inequality were some of these issues.
