The membrane potential of a nerve cell will depolarize (become less negative) if there is an INCREASE in the __.

Answer:

The membrane potential of a nerve cell will depolarize if there is an increase in the positive ions inside the cell.

Explanation:

When nerves are in resting potential it is -70mV. In this stage interior of the cell is negatively charged and outside is more positive. When depolarization occurs the inside cell becomes positive.

This is due to the rush of sodium ions into the cell by voltage-gated channels. Now the inside charge is more positive and the chloride ions move out of the cell. Thus outside becomes more negative.

After some time of depolarization stage, potassium ions move out of the cell making the nerve cell again negative. Now the depolarized stage becomes repolarized by the entry of potassium ions.

During depolarization, the potential of the cell is -55mV.  When repolarization occurs, it is again -70mV. But the potassium channels are open and some of the potassium ions move out of the cell making the inside environment more negative. This is known as hyperpolarization condition.

This hyperpolarization remains for a short period where action potential can't occur. This period is called the refractory period. Again potassium ions enter into the cell. This results in the resting potential of the neuron again.

The ultimate goal of sustainable development is to limit the future use of resources b. meet current and future resource needs C
egoroff_w [7]

The correct answer is B. Meet current and future resource needs.

Explanation:

Sustainability implies an equilibrium between the natural resources available and the resources humanity requires. This equilibrium is reached when the natural resources extracted from nature are enough to satisfy human needs without depleting the resources or causing these are not available in the future. In this context, the goal of sustainable development is to make sure now and in the future resource needs are meet (option B). Moreover, this is possible through actions such as recycling, reducing deforestation, creating environment-friendly technologies, among others that reduce the depletion of resources or preserve the environment.

How does inbreeding alter genotype and allele frequencies?
erik [133]

Explanation:

The inbreeding process, are blood crossings between relatives who have a common ancestor. Inbreeding leads to an increase in the frequency of homozygous genotypes and a decrease in the frequency of heterozygotes. We may also note that although changes in genotypic frequencies occur, no changes in allelic frequencies are observed over successive generations of self-fertilization. The main consequence of 2 individuals sharing one or more common ancestors is that they may carry replicas (identical copies) of one or more genes present in these ancestors. And if these individuals mate, they can pass on such replicas to their offspring, generating self-sibling offspring, that is, with two identical copies of the same gene that was present in these common ancestors.
