America was one of the nations that had some control in China for a while during a weak Chinese empire's rule. America acquired the Philippines from Spain and was surprised to learn the Filipinos did not agree. A bloody war ensued. America's worst imperial moments were that Philippine American War and the poor relationships with Native Americans leading to violent and brutal wars. But, let's face it, that is a bad legacy. The Spanish American War aided the Cubans against Spain and did not result in annexation of Cuba. I consider it a just war. Acquisition of Hawai'i and the Philippines prevented their conquest by more cruel nations, a good thing for them and America, but those acts were handled poorly and unjustly.
