An example of natural selection is the tail of a male peacock. The females of the species choose mates based on the colors of th

e males’ tail feathers. If females begin using different criteria than feather color when they choose mates, what would most likely happen to the tails of peacocks over time? increased variation in tail feather color because the selection pressure has been relieved increased variation in tail feather color because the peacocks try different ways to impress the females decreased variation in tail feather color because no form of the trait is advantageous decreased variation in tail feather color because the only reason for variation was selection pressure

Answer:

The correct answer is option C,   decreased variation in tail feather color because no form of the trait is advantageous

Explanation:

The variation in the tail features of male peacock is predominantly due to the sexual selection and not due to the natural selection. Thus, in case if a female peacock starts selecting the male on the basis of any other criteria let say eyes , voice etc. there are chances that the female with the same color feather has sex with male of same color feather thus, the variation in the feathers of male may reduce. However, when male feather’s was the only selection criteria, there were huge chances that female of one feather color always like to  interact with males of varying feather color thereby producing further variation in feathers of male peacock.
