He was the most famous and influential Scottish-American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher, glaciologist who made the valuable contribution through his activism to the security of US wild-lands, such as Yosemite Valley or the Western forests.

He established the environmental organization Known as Sierra Club. He also composed several reports and described his sailing experiences in order to promote ecological management and protection principles.
