How can you tell before dividing taht the first digit of the quotient 2,874 divided by 3 is in the hundreds place?

When you divide, you're doing the oposite of multiplication. To know that your partical answer is going to be in the hundreds place is you follow the pattern.
2874/3=958
you take the 3 and you divide it by the last two didits of the number given (28) and that'll get you into your hundreds place.
