The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan.

EXPLANATION:

In the year 1978,Afghanistan adjoined few of the southern Soviet republics of the USSR, causing it easy for Moscow to finance a communist-led government led by Taraki when it gained power in Kabul in April 1978.Various common Afghans refused the new communist government because its atheism was had differences with their Muslim faith. The communists detained, wounded and assassinated many Muslim religious leaders. This led to the formation of an anti-communist stand known as the Mujahideen.

In September 1979 the Afghan politician, Amin, prepared for the murder of the communist Prime Minister, Taraki, and Amin won control. Amin entered into talks with the US.

This alarmed the USSR who didn’t need American impact on their Southern border. On 24 December 1979, Soviet troops attacked Afghanistan. Amin was killed and a pro-Moscow leader, Babrak Karmal, was introduced in his place.

Observing the circumstances in Afghanistan as an extension of the Cold War, the US backed the Mujahideen against their old enemy, the USSR, and refused to sign SALT II.
