species living within a particular region. Humans have upset the balance of biodiversity in many areas on Earth. One that stands out is the deforestation of tropical rainforests. Once these forests are cut down, the area turns into a desert (desertification). Why is it so important to maintain Earth's biodiversity? Give two reasons.
