It has two flat and oval lobes, which lie one on each side of the trachea and are connected by a bridge known as the <em>isthmus of the thyroid gland</em> lying in front of the trachea.

The thyroid gland produces the hormones triiodothyronine and throxine which play important roles in the body's metabolism, protein synthesis as well as tissue development and growth in young ones.
