The thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped gland which is located adjacent to the trachea in the neck. The parathyroid glands lies posterior to it. It has two flat and oval lobes, which lie one on each side of the trachea and are connected by a bridge known as the <em>isthmus of the thyroid gland</em> lying in front of the trachea.

The thyroid gland produces the hormones triiodothyronine and throxine which play important roles in the body's metabolism, protein synthesis as well as tissue development and growth in young ones.
