If i were the judge who tried him for treason ,i would have examined all angles of the case.First,one of the bases of the trial should be John Brown's background and his journey against slavery. His advocacy against slavery which shows on his record should be enough to convict him.
Humans were the dominant beings of society, which is definitely comparable to today's society. The culture in which the selection was first told was (more than likely) learning that although humans don't do much for animals, they provide a lot for us.
