Following the Emancipation Proclamation, many blacks fled to the North to fight. To gain true freedom, blacks needed to get North. The Union also offered emancipation to slaves who fought for the North. The Confiscation Act also allowed Union soldiers to confiscate slaves and bring them into the Union army. Slaves taken by Union soldiers were allowed to aid in the war effort through not armed to fight. The first regiment of blacks soldiers was the 54th regiment formed in Massachusetts.

This was caused by the emancipation declaration by Lincoln. Lincoln believed that the emancipation would weaken the confederation forces as it denied them manpower for the war. The emancipation was therefore a military strategy to defeat the south. the blacks therefore joined the union course serving in different cadres in the union army. <span />
