A statistician at a metal manufacturing plant is sampling the thickness of metal plates. If an outlier occurs within a particula

r sample, the statistician must check the configuration of the machine. The distribution of metal thickness has mean 23.5 millimeters (mm) and standard deviation 1.4 mm. Based on the two-standard deviations rule for outliers, which is the greatest thickness that would require the statistician to check the configuration of the machine?

Answer: 26.3 mm

Step-by-step explanation:

According to the two-standard deviations rule for outliers, the values that does not lie within 2 standard deviations from mean are outliers.

If Mean = 23.5 millimeters (mm) and standard deviation =  1.4 mm

Then, greatest thickness need to check = mean + 2 (standard deviation)

= 23.5 + 2(1.4)

= 23.5 + 2.8

= 26.3 mm

hence, the greatest thickness that would require the statistician to check the configuration of the machine = 26.3 mm.

Monica wants to tie a ribbon around the trunk of an oak tree that has a circular trunk about 11 inches in diameter. Not counting
Karolina [17]

Answer:  34.57 inches.

Step-by-step explanation:

Given : Diameter of tree's trunk =  11 inches

Then, the length of ribbon needed just to reach around the tree = Circumference of trunk.

We know that the circumference of the circle is given by :-

C=\pi d , where d= diameter

Then, Circumference of trunk. = \pi (11)

Put \pi=\dfrac{22}{7} , we get

Circumference of trunk. = \dfrac{22}{7}\times(11)\approx34.57\text{ inches}

Hence , the length of ribbon needed just to reach around the tree = 34.57 inches.
