Let Max be $x$ years.

Then Lenny is  $3x$  years

When we subtract Max's age from Lenny's age we obtain  $3x-x$

This is equal to  $24$  

Putting all together we have

$3x-x=24$

$2x=24$

$x=12$

$Therefore Max is 12 years and Lenny is 36 years$
