Even as her brothers and sisters sleep safely in the car, hidden by the darkness, Dicey cannot sleep because she is too preocupied peope may finds them and "ask angry questions". She is afraid they will have to suffer the consequences of the actions they were forced to carry out because of her mother walking out on them.
