Reagan significantly increased military spending, which went from 267.1 billion dollars in 1980 (4.9% of GDP and 22.7% of public expenditure) to 393.1 billion in 1988 (5.8% of GDP and 27.3% of public spending). These figures were not seen since the end of the American participation in the Vietnam War, in 1973.

The Reagan administration turned the arms race into a technological struggle, where the largest industrial, military and economic capacity of the United States imposed to the Soviet bloc. During the Reagan administration, Trident nuclear submarines (Ohio class) appeared and took advantage of advances in computer science.

For better working conditions for experianced laborors. the knights of labor however wanted better working conditions for both non experienced and experienced laborers, which ultimatley led to their downfall as the experianced laborers looked down on the inexperiienced and joined the american federation instead as they only wanted this for experienced laborers.
