I can help with the last question, embalming was and still is the preservation of the dead, what they did was take out all of the organs with making minimal damage to the body, according to research to do this they would take out the brain through the nose as to not damage the head. They would also put oils in the body. however to begin the process they had to dry it, which would decay less.
