Microtubules are the tubular polymers of tubulin, which develop the component of the cytoskeleton that offers the cytoplasm of certain bacteria and eukaryotic cells with the shape and composition.

The four prime functions of microtubules are:

1. Shape and support the cell.

2. Accumulate or relate the tubulin dimers.

3. Distinguishes chromosomes at the time of cellular division.

4. Function as track along that helps the organelles equipped with motor proteins to move.

The chloroplasts in plant cells, which convert the energy of sunlight into chemical energy via photosynthesis, are a kind of plastid, and they originated from bacteria that could do photosynthesis.</span>

The opening and closing of these channels may depend on the binding of signaling molecules such as neurotransmitters (ligand-gated ion channels), or on the voltage across the membrane (voltage-gated ion channels).
