Symbolism is used to express or represent ideas or qualities. Look around your environment or think about the symbols you encoun

ter on a daily basis. They could include a stop sign, an app icon on your phone, a team mascot, and even the US flag. We see and use symbols every day. When you look for symbolic meaning behind an object, character, or even colors, you begin to see how symbols represent something bigger and more abstract. For example, the tree in A Separate Peace by John Knowles symbolizes Gene's childhood memory. It takes him back to when he and his friends took risks without thinking about the consequences. Pick an object that you feel symbolizes your life or a specific time in your life. What symbol would best represent you? Explain your reasoning.

(i will use an example cause this is not me xD and i hope this helps you)

An object that I feel that symbolizes a time when I was younger, will be a parrot. I think a parrot symbolizes me when I was younger is because I used to always repeat almost everything that people say. Even if someone I didn't know says something, I would repeat it and I would get in trouble. Another reason why I think parrots symbolized my younger self is because I really liked bright colors all around me. My room was colorful, my drawings were colorful, and my clothes were colorful, just like parrot's feathers, they are different and colorful. One last reason is because just how parrots live and like the tropical weather, I would always want to go somewhere tropical and hot, for an example, Florida. These are my reasons why I think a parrot symbolized my younger self.

What metaphors are in my last duchess and what is the message they convey?
stepladder [879]

Robert Browning's "My Last Duchess" does not rely heavily on metaphors. It is rather a monologue delivered by the speaker describing a painting of his wife and his wife as a person when she was still living. The painting can be said to symbolize the wife, the last duchess. There are a few metaphors sprinkled throughout the poem, though, as the speaker paints a verbal portrait of his former wife.

When the speaker says in lines 1-2 "That’s my last Duchess painted on the wall, / Looking as if she were alive," his choice of words could be considered metaphorical. The duchess herself is not literally on the wall; rather, this is a painting or a likeness of her, which stands in for her throughout the poem. One of the few metaphors in the poem is the "spot of joy" referenced by the speaker. The speaker suggests that most people wonder what exactly makes his lady smile and appear happy in the painting.
