You can't see them without a microscope, nor can you smell or taste them individually.
Im pretty sure this is how it works:
you burn yourself,
immediately, you jump back because obviously, it hurts
That part (the jump back) is your skeletal and muscular working together to move you away from the danger
This is called the fight or flight response.
