A basketball is thrown upwards. The height f(t), in feet, of the basketball at time t, in seconds, is given by the following fun

ction: f(t) = −16t2 + 44t + 12 Which of the following is a reasonable domain of the graph of the function when the basketball falls from its maximum height to the ground? −0.25 < t < 2 0 < t < 3 1 < t < 2.4 1.375 < t <

let's first find the places where the ball hits the ground, that way we know how many seconds it took, let's set f(t) = 0 like before, check the picture below.

\bf \stackrel{f(t)}{0}=-16t^2+44t+12\implies 0=-4t^2+11t+3\\\\\\4t^2-11t-3=0\implies (4t+1)(t-3)=0\implies t=\begin{cases}3\\-\frac{1}{4}\end{cases}

so we know the graph goes from -1/4 to 3, so the ball hits the ground on its way back down at x = 3.

now, let's find the maximum, we only need the x-coordinate from the vertex,

\bf \textit{vertex of a vertical parabola, using coefficients}\\\\f(t)=\stackrel{\stackrel{a}{\downarrow }}{-16}t^2\stackrel{\stackrel{b}{\downarrow }}{+44}t\stackrel{\stackrel{c}{\downarrow }}{+12}\qquad \qquad \left(-\cfrac{ b}{2 a}~~~~ ,~~~~  c-\cfrac{ b^2}{4 a}\right)\\\\\\\left(-\cfrac{44}{2(-16)}~~,\qquad   \right)\implies \left(\cfrac{11}{8}~~,\qquad   \right)

so, the ball reaches at maximum when x = 11/8, or 1.375, and hits the ground when x = 3.

so the domain, namely the values for x are, x ⩾ 1.375 and x ⩽ 3, or we can write it as a triplet of 1.375 ⩽ x ⩽ 3.

• A car uses 30 gallons of gasoline for a trip of 800 miles. How many gallons would
nevsk [136]

Quantity of gasoline needed by a car to run 800 miles = 30 gallons

Quantity of gasoline needed by a car to run 1 mile =

= 30 ÷ 800

= 0.0375 gallons

So , to run 1 mile a car would need = 0.0375 gallons of oil

To run 700 miles the quantity of gasoline needed =

= 700 × 0.0375

= 26.25 gallons of gasoline

Therefore , a car will use 26.25 gallons of gasoline on a trip of 700 miles .

What would be the answer to 8x^6/ 8x^5 =?
Lubov Fominskaja [6]
In dividing two equation with variables and exponent, First you must align or rearrange the equation and group them base on their variables but don't forget the sign of each variables. Second, proceed in dividing its quantity and then subtract its exponent to the other variables having the same. So by calculating it, the answer would be  X or X^1

The toy shop stocks tricycles and go-carts.
Mandarinka [93]

Total number of wheels in the toy shop = 37 wheels

Number of wheels for tricycles = 3

Number of wheels for go-carts = 5

  • Since the total number of tricycles and go-carts are not given, we solve this question using Assumption.

  • Let's assume: We have 4 tricycles and 4 go-carts

(4 x 3) + (4 x 5)

= 12 + 20

= 32 wheels. This assumption is wrong.

  • Let's assume: We have 4 tricycles and 5 go-carts

(4 x 3) + (5 x 5)

= 12 + 25

= 37 wheels. This assumption is correct.

Therefore, we have  4 tricycles and 5 go-carts in the toy shop.

Help with those three please!!
Scilla [17]

Answer:

Part 1) Option A. The axis of symmetry is x=4

Part 2) Option C. minimum

Part 3) Option A. (4,-4)

Part 4) Option B. (2,0) and (6,0)

Step-by-step explanation:

we have

f(x)=x^{2}-8x+12

Part 1) What is the axis of symmetry of the parabola described by the equation above?

we know that

The equation above is a vertical parabola open upward

The axis of symmetry is the x-coordinate of the vertex

Find the vertex of the parabola (convert the equation in vertex form)

f(x)-12=x^{2}-8x

f(x)-12+16=x^{2}-8x+16

f(x)+4=x^{2}-8x+16

f(x)+4=(x-4)^{2}

f(x)=(x-4)^{2}-4 ----> equation in vertex form

The vertex of the parabola is (4,-4)

so

The axis of symmetry is x=4

Part 2) The vertex of the equation above is also

we know that

The equation above is a vertical parabola open upward

therefore

The vertex is a minimum

Part 3) What is the vertex of the parabola described by the equation above

we know that

The equation of the parabola into vertex form is equal to

f(x)=(x-4)^{2}-4

therefore

The vertex of the parabola is (4,-4)

Part 4) What are the  x-intercepts of the parabola described by the equation above

we know that

The x-intercepts are the values of x when the value of y is equal to zero

so

f(x)+4=(x-4)^{2}

f)x)=0

so

4=(x-4)^{2}

take square root both sides

(x-4)=(+/-)2

x=4(+/-)2

x=4(+)2=6

x=4(-)2=2

therefore

The x-intercepts are

(2,0) and (6,0)
