The regions were sucked up into the conflict and into numerous proxy wars. The region alignment was of major concern to the two powers each competing to check each other powers in the region and extend its interests. The middle east became more important because of its rich oil fields.
World War I was really the fist "total war" in the sense that practically all available manpower and resources were used to fight the enemy. This meant that there were no "breaks" and very few rules to the fighting.
