Nicholas Copernicus, a Polish scientist living about a century before Galileo, had already come up with the unorthodox idea that the Sun was at the center of the solar system. Galileo knew about and had accepted Copernicus's heliocentric (Sun-centered) theory.

It was Galileo's observations of Venus that proved the theory. Using his telescope, Galileo found that Venus went through phases, just like our Moon. But, the nature of these phases could only be explained by Venus going around the Sun, not the Earth. Galileo concluded that Venus must travel around the Sun, passing at times behind and beyond it, rather than revolving directly around the Earth.

Galileo's observations of the phases of Venus virtually proved that the Earth was not the center of the universe. It was this assertion which most angered the Church leaders of the time.

In both Britain and the United States, what happened in the 1870's that limited child labor?
agasfer [191]

Answer: In both, the United States and Britain, one thing that happened in 1870 that limited child labor was that compulsory education and attendance laws were passed in both countries.

Explanation: Before those laws were passed, children worked long hours in poor working conditions. This was fatal to children because owners used children to enter dangerous places in the mines, were adults could not fit in. And the money they were paid was insignificant. The laws established minimum age for work, minimum wages and requirements to attend school. The Elementary Education Act of England in 1870 established the compulsory education for children between 5 and 13years old. It was known as the William Foster Law. In both, the United States and Britain, one thing that happened in 1870 that limited child labor was that compulsory education and attendance laws were passed in both countries.
