Against Romantic supernatural events, the the symbolic and the imaginative, Naturalism embraced fact, logic and empiricism. One of the branches of knowledge embraced by Naturalism was psychology, especially Behaviourism. In The Awakening, Kate Chopin emphasizes the role of human instincts and society in the actions of the characters. The natural enviroment and society have great influence in the characters even if they are not aware of it.
