Realism is said to be a reaction to Romanticism because it rejected the views of the Age of Enlightment -when emotions and the essence of being were emphasized- and depicted life by describing everyday activities, including harsh, authentic struggles. Realism rejected Romanticism by leaving aside the idealized subjects. Romanticism was, then, an idealized view of reality, while Realism represented subject matters truthfully.
