Hello!

Solve the following system of equations by the substitution method. 5x = y + 6 2x - 3y = 4 What is the value of the y-coordinate?

Solving:

5x = y + 6 (I)

2x - 3y = 4 (II)

---------------------

We have:

5x = y + 6 \to x = \dfrac{y+6}{5}

Soon:

2x - 3y = 4

2* \left(\dfrac{y+6}{5}\right) - 3y = 4

\dfrac{2y+12}{5} - 3y = 4

least common multiple (5)

\dfrac{2y+12}{5} - 3y = 4\to \dfrac{2y+12}{\diagup\!\!\!\!\!5} - \dfrac{15y}{\diagup\!\!\!\!\!5} = \dfrac{20}{\diagup\!\!\!\!\!5}

2y + 12 - 15y = 20

- 15y + 2y = 20 - 12

- 13\:y = 8

\boxed{\boxed{y = - \dfrac{8}{13} }}\end{array}}\qquad\quad\checkmark

Answer:

- 8/13

What should be the first step in adding these equations to eliminate y<br> 8x+3y= 2<br> + 4x-by=-7
Shtirlitz [24]

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

Are you sure you wanted that "b" in the second equation?

If so, here's how we eliminate y:

1) Multiply the first equation by b:  8bx + 3by = 2b

2) Multiply the second equation by 3:  12x - 3by = -21

3) Combine these two results.  We get:

(8b + 12)x = 2b - 21

Here we have eliminated  y, but still have an equation in two variables, b and x.

If a×b=0, then a=0 or b=0

Now g(x)=0 for x=-9 or x=-8
