I think the approach that often used is Constructivism.
Often times, in a specific society , there will be a characteristic of pattern and behaviors that are tolerated and the one that don't.
For example, in Eastern culture, it is not tolerated to call someone that is older solely by name.
The three main issues that arose at the debates during the Constitutional Convention include: slavery, Congressional Representation (in favor of big or small states), and the new Executive branch.
Smaller states and larger states debated over representation in Congress and put forth the New Jersey plan (in favor of smaller states) and the Virginia plan (in favor of smaller states). States debated whether representation should be decided by state wealth, size, and/or population. Also debated was the issue of slavery. Many southern state economies depended on slaves and slave labor, yet many northern states asserted that slavery was unconstitutional and/or immoral. States also debated on the amount of power that should be given to the executive branch, the length of presidential terms, and how the president would be elected.

In political studies, globalization has changed the way countries and companies approach different aspects of trade and other kinds of interaction. Concepts such as Eco-politics and human rights have been playing a more prominent role in recent times because today it is so much more difficult to hide things such as the violation of human rights or the damage many corporations do to the environment.
Modern times have allowed the connection of people through the internet and social media, so people can talk directly no matter frontiers, languages, or distance.
So any issues that happen in one part of the world that can be of public concern can be noticed and communicated instantly so the whole world can be aware.
