Why did americans want to build a transcontinental railroad??

Having a railroad would make transportation of goods much easier. This would also make it safer and more efficient. There were a few risks involved but far less than transporting by conventional means.

The answer is The increased opposition to war. 

Nixon was not popular with his foreign policy of war to fight communists. During his term, people held numerous strikes that showed that the people were against its implementation. They don't want numerous soldiers to get involved and suffer. They also don't want people from foreign lands to lose their lives because of this.

The holy roman emperor (Henry IV) wanted to make the church independent from secular rulers so he banned the practice of Lay Investiture. The pope (Gregory VII) excommunicated him and went to find a new emperor when Henry IV confessed to him he was a sinner and Gregory forgave him. But Henry was so butt hurt about it that he sent to roman military to kill the pope.

There were also things that put the South at a disadvantage. One of the main weaknesses was their economy. They did not have factories like those in the North. They could not quickly make guns and other supplies that were needed.
