Trench warfare came to define the western front as follows:

Trench fighting achieved its height on the Western Front during the World War I, which took place from 1914–18, when troops of millions of men fought one another in a line of trenches stretching from the Belgian coast to Switzerland via northeastern France.

One possible explanation that First World War on the Western Front resulted a enormous trench war was that Western Europe was heavily populated. The trench lines had the effect of putting Western Europe into two fortresses whose military forces were sieging one another along a single border. In the North, geography fought toward consolidation.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety". Benjamin
Fittoniya [83]

Answer and Explanation:

This quote is one of the many quotes from Benjamin Franklin which is somewhat self explanatory. Here he aims to emphasize the non-negotiability and emphatic importance of freedom. His quotes means that individuals who are ready to sacrifice their freedom regarding their right to speech or religion or every other right accorded justifiably to each individual in the society, if this individual is ready to give up his freedom in such a way that he cowers for the sake of his safety then this individual does not deserve his freedom or the safety he seeks
