25% off means 75% of original price.

Set original price as x.
0.75x=36
x=48

The original price was $48.

Its like eating one portion and a half. So, you eat a portion, and then you eat a portion half of what you just ate. Hence why 3 times 1.5 is 4.5, because 3+1.5 equals 4.5
