In the north, northerners weren't much of slavery supporters, and allowed slaves to get away with many things such as an education, right to work, freedom, etc. The north was the one who supported the approval of the Emancipation Proclamation to grant slaves their rights, while the South threatened America to separate and form its OWN country, (what they planned to be the "Confederate States"), just to allow slavery. The south even took their advantage of slavery into abusing their slaves if their behavior didn't satisfy them.
Basic sum-up:
South- Strictly supporting slavery
North- Trying to abolish slavery
So, slaves' lives would be different, due to more freedom being provided to them in the north than the south.
