This is a non- governmental organization  founded in 1977 in Kenya  by professor  Wangarri Maattai.  The primary objective of this grassroots movement  was  to ensure conservation of natural resources.

The Green Belt Movemnet(GBM) used tree planting as an avenue  to sensitize women about gender equality,   need to address poverty, to fight for justice.It also focus on the  need to embrace conservation of natural resources, by employ modern method of cooking in order to discourage   usage of firewood which encourage deforestation and to avoid soil erosion.

Profressor Wangari used the millions of tree planted to create awareness of  the movement among the populace especially women, and to empower them.
