I believe say that “Simon nodded towards Bruce and told him it was time to call it quits for the day” could be improved with a dialog. Since The narrator is telling in reported speech something that Simon said. Thus being a perfect fit for a dialog. :)

WITCHER [35]

English I, II Bell Ringer

Weeks 21/22, Day 1/ 2

LA.910.1.7.7 The student will compare and contrast elements in multiple texts

(e.g., setting, characters, and problems).

Read the passage and select the best answer.

Scott started nodding off in class. Mrs. Thomas tapped his desk as she passed it.

They started off the school year without a teacher and now that they had a teacher

they missed the substitute teachers. The class took advantage of every substitute

teacher that came in to teach. They would take turns dropping books, pass notes all

period, and take turns pretending to sneeze. Each day a different substitute teacher

would show up and every day they did everything they could think of to annoy

him or her. No one learned anything. The new teacher put an end to their antics.

The more disruptive they were, the more homework they received. It was bad

enough that she gave a ton of homework every night no matter how well behaved

they were. Scott looked over at his teammate Brian and smiled. He couldn’t wait

until the track meet this afternoon. Brian was an expert at the hurdles and Scott

was king of the long jump. Scott was having difficulty in school lately. He was

more interested in staying up late watching television and he was having difficulty

staying awake in class as a result. Brian was also struggling but he was having

trouble sleeping at night due to family problems. It seemed lately that his parents

arguments became louder and louder every night.

I DO

1. According to the passage how are Scott and Brian alike?

LA.910.1.7.7 TESTED The student will compare and contrast elements in

multiple texts (e.g., setting, characters, and problems).

1. Explanation of the correct answer:

Choice A – This answer is not correct because the passage states that they are both

on the track team. There is nothing in the passage to indicate that they are on the

football team.

Choice B – This answer is correct because the passage states that Scott is

having difficulty in school lately and Brian was also struggling.

Choice C – This answer is not correct because there is nothing in the passage to

indicate that Scott is having family problems.

Choice D – This answer is not correct because there is nothing in the passage to

indicate that either one is happy to have a new teacher.

2. Explanation of the correct answer:

Choice A –This answer is not correct because the passage states that they had

substitute teachers at the beginning and at the end they had a teacher.

Choice B –This answer is not correct because the passage states that in the end

they received a ton of homework.

Choice C –This answer is correct because the passage states that in the

beginning they took advantage of the substitute teachers and did not learn

anything. In the end their teacher gave a ton of homework.

Choice D – This answer is not correct because there is nothing in the passage to

indicate that the substitute teachers were giving homework nor is there anything in

the end to indicate that they weren’t learning anything.
