Grant said Unconditional surrender (non-negotiable (cause Grant didnt want Lee to ask for money or other things if he surrenders)) or war. This became a very famous speech and gave grant the nickname Ulysses "Unconditional" Grant. Lee eventually agreed to unconditional surrender.

Moreover, there were millions of dollars poured into the Charleston area economy and there were hundreds of thousands of jobs provided to military and civilian personnel and the huge majority being civilians within the years, and then many military personnel also worked at or passed through the base returned to Charleston to retire.</span>
