The reign of Peter the Great as Tsar of Russia (1682–1725) marked the beginning of a new era in Russian history. He took a backward nation which was at a great disadvantage with most European countries and turned it into a modern and powerful nation that represented a threat to other powers.

Among some of his reign's achievements were the reformation of the administrative system, the modernization, and reorganization of education, and the army according to Western Standards and the subordination of the Orthodox Church to his reign. Likewise, he also founded Saint Petersburg in 1703 and officially moved the country's capital from Moscow to this new city nine years later. Saint Petersburg remained the capital of the Russian Empire for more than two hundred years until 1918 after the Russian Revolution.
