<span>The North had a larger manufacturing base and shipyards free from attack. The North also had the edge on a navy. The North's fleet was small but the South had none at all. Northern warships could be built in safe ports. The South's places to build ships were small and always dangerous. This caused them to purchase ships from Europe. </span>
