Unrestricted Submarine Warfare

The end of the First World War saw widespread devastation throughout Europe, and this necessitated a reconsidering of diplomatic relations between the various nations.

Further explanation:

The Allied Powers achieved victory, thereby establishing political structures that were conducive to the spread of Western liberalism and democracy. Wilson’s 14- points were formulated to introduce diplomatic co-operation among nations and solve disputes among nations in a diplomatic manner. The main spirit of Wilson’s 14-points was to prevent any more devastation from war, to restrict the use of armed intervention, and to respect every nation’s international borders. Wilson also formulated policies that would initiate economic co-operation between nations, and dissolving trade and customs barriers would allow nations to recover faster from the ravages of war, and prosper equally. While all of his measures were formulated on a good moral spirit, there were major flaws, as there was no concrete organizational structure to enforce these laws. Moreover, Wilson’s recommendations were not meant to be applied equally to all nations.

The Fourteen Points were formulated by President Wilson in the hope that they would be utilized while making the peace treaties with respect to the Central Powers such as Germany, Hungary, and Turkey. While the principles had a moral fervour attached to them, the diplomacy and practicality of these principles were highly debated. The success of these policies depended on an organization that could enforce them. Wilson’s policies gave more importance to the USA’s moral grounds on joining the war, instead of realizing nationalist ambitions. The Fourteen Points emerged at a time when the Progressive movement in the United States reached its heights and aimed for global co-operation in diplomacy and economic agreements.
