Simply put, a hero is a character who faces difficult and unpleasant situations, or shows courage, in the face of danger.

When a hero confronts and experiences downfall, the hero is referred to as a tragic hero.

So; literally, a tragic hero is the protagonist of a tragedy in dramas.

From the definition given above, we understand that a hero remains an hero until he experiences a downfall before he'll be referred to as a tragic hero or a protagonist. This is termed, Hamartia.

Hence, we can conclude that the common trait of tragic heroes is the Hamartia, which means a tragic flaw that causes the downfall of a hero.
