The South was divided into regions called the old South and lower South. The old South was the land of rice, indigo and cotton. The lower South on the other hand was the land of cotton and sugar. This means that the South was developed. Because of its production power and trade potential, many northern people believed about the South that it should be allowed to become an independent country.
