of brown waters. It reached below her knee and made itself almost a garment for her. And then she did it up again nervously and quickly. The author's purpose is to express that beauty is not only measured by the quality of the clothes worn, it also considers simple physical traits like beautiful long wavy hair and expressive sparkling eyes, so that Della shouldn't be deemed unworthy due to the fact that she has an old jacket and hat.
