After the industrial revolution boomed nationalism became a strategy to protect the local economy. However, sectionalism occurred because some regions were more benefited than others. In this case southern economy was not very developed they were still raw material producers and the proposal from former president James Madison didn't benefit them as it did to the northerners. Also, they had good deals with different countries.
