The Sui dynasty restored unity in China, through the use of costly military campaigns, they were able to reunite an empire that reunited much of the territory ruled by the Han dynasty. Wen Ti is remembered in Chinese history for his harsh rule. They forced peasants who owed taxes to the government to work off their debt by fighting in the army or working on extensive public works projects. Wen Ti encouraged the practice if Confucianism and Daoism as a way to unite his many Chinese subjects.
