It is approximated that soil holds approximately 2,500 billion tonnes of carbon while the atmosphere holds approximately 800 billion tones. Plat and animal life combined hold about 560 billion tonnes of carbon. The carbon in the soil comes mainly from dead organic matter and microbes in the soil.
