In the story "The Lady or the Tiger?" a King devices a form of punishmen in which he forces every man that dares to love his daughter to chose from two doors: behind one, there is the lady, whom he could marry, behind the other, there is a hungry tiger, waiting to kill him.
A courtier of low station falls in love with the King's daughter and is forced to chose between the two doors. The man asks the daughter to signal him to the correct door and hopes she will help him.
