Dred Scott was an enslaved African-American that sue his master to get his freedom and the freedom of his family arguing he had been taken from Missouri that was a territory in which slavery was legal to the Missouri territory which was a territory in which slavery had been banned and where Scott had lived for four years. However, the Supreme Court decided Dred Scott could legally get his freedom because he was a slave and not a citizen and therefore could not sue or be protected by law. Thus, the Supreme Court ruled that Dred Scott did not have a right to sue for his freedom because he was a slave.
